While enrolled in the program, participants will maintain their part or full-time employment status at CVPH or AHMC.
What if I’m not an employee at one of the Vermont UVM Health partners? Can I still apply?

Once I am enrolled in the Pathway Program, are there any tax implications that I should be aware of?
The amounts paid under this Program have tax implications. Amounts that are paid to your educational institution for tuition, fees, books, supplies, or other expenses constitute payments under an educational assistance program described in Section 127 of the Internal Revenue Code and are therefore excludable up to $5,250 per calendar year. Amounts paid in excess of $5,250 per year are taxable income and are subject to applicable withholding taxes.
These taxes will be withheld from your regular earnings, resulting in a reduction to your usual paycheck. To avoid unforeseen hardships, the reduction should be planned for, and if necessary, additional funding sources such as loans should be sought.
Please consult your personal tax advisor, as UVM Health cannot provide you with individualized tax advice.
Where can I find more information about this program?
Online Master’s in Nursing Education | SUNY Empire State University
Why are we developing this program?
This program was developed in response to a shortage of nursing faculty with appropriate education to train the next generation of nurses. It will also help bridge the pay gap or change in benefits many nurses face when attempting to fill an adjunct role.
Which partners are included?
Recipients must be employees of Alice Hyde Medical Center (AHMC) or Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH).
How can I complete this program while working in my current role?
The SUNY Empire program is a virtual, asynchronous program designed to be flexible for working adults. Everyone learns at their own pace, and the balance between the educational program, independent study, work responsibilities, and personal life will vary widely among learners. Successfully managing these commitments will require a high degree of focus and organization.
What is a dual service agreement?
A dual service agreement is a contractual agreement between an employer and an academic partner that allows the employer to pay employees at their employer hourly rate/salary while functioning in the role of the academic partner clinical faculty. The academic partner then reimburses the employer at their standard rate for clinical faculty. The employers absorb the costs associated with the difference in pay. These agreements allow employees to stay full-time (or part-time) employees with benefits, without increasing their hourly workload.
How do I fulfill the dual service agreement?
You will apply to clinical faculty openings at the partnering NY colleges (North Country Community College, SUNY Plattsburgh, Clinton Community College). To count towards the dual service requirement, you must commit to at least 8 hours/week for two academic years.
How will my time in a dual service role be covered?
Unit or department leadership will support the participants in their role by covering time the employee is in their dual service role. This must be handled with leadership on a case-by-case basis. Participants will not lose their current schedule block due to serving in the dual service role.
Will I receive paid study hours or a stipend?
No.
Has this program been done before?
We created this program in Vermont using grant funds. Due to its success, we are piloting this similar program in NY, and we will want to hear your feedback.
What if I fail a class?
If you are struggling academically, please reach out to SUNY Empire to discuss potential support or options. If you fail a class, you would need to retake the course at your own expense.
Why is this program for me?
This program will support your continued learning while helping you build the teaching and leadership skills essential for nursing professional development. It will strengthen your expertise when you serve as clinical faculty and position you to contribute meaningfully to training the next generation of nurses.
I started an MSN program, but I have not finished. Am I eligible?
Participants will meet with admissions advisors to review past courses and grades on their transcript to determine whether they meet the requirements for the program.
What happens if I am not selected for a seat?
This program is a one-time, grant-funded opportunity. If you are not selected, we encourage you to check this website regularly for updates on future programs. If you are interested in pursuing your MSN independently, please reach out to your HR office to learn more about tuition reimbursement options that may be available to you.
I do not have a BSN. Am I eligible?
