JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Epilepsy Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will work collaboratively with a physician-led epilepsy care team to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care to patients with epilepsy and seizure disorders. The APP will perform clinical assessments, manage treatment plans, coordinate care, and educate patients and families to ensure optimal health outcomes. The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced clinical expertise in neurology, specifically epilepsy care, and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.

EDUCATION:

Successful completion of educational program recognized by the national Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, certification as a Vermont Physician Assistant through completion of Board approved apprenticeship and evaluation or graduation from the board-approved P.A. program. Must have P.A. and Bachelor’s Degree. Successful completion of a CAAHEP approved PA educational program. NCCPA certification is expected. Must hold certification from the Vt. Board of Medical Practice as a PA. Must have a bachelor's degree, master degree preferred.

Or

Registered nurse who has successfully completed formal education program approved by the Vermont Board of Nursing, or state or national accrediting agency which prepares nurses to function in advanced nursing practice. Must also be certified by national certifying agency recognized by the Vermont State Board of Nursing.

EXPERIENCE:

Previous experience as a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant desired.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Assessment & Diagnosis:
    • Conduct comprehensive history and physical exams for patients with epilepsy or suspected seizure disorders.
    • Review and interpret diagnostic tests such as EEGs, MRIs, or other neuroimaging studies.
    • Evaluate patients for seizure triggers, medication side effects, and comorbid conditions.
  • Clinical Management & Treatment Planning:
    • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the physician team.
    • Prescribe and adjust anti-seizure medications, as appropriate.
    • Coordinate interventions for drug-resistant epilepsy, including referrals for surgical evaluation or other specialized therapies.
  • Patient & Family Education:
    • Educate patients and families about epilepsy, treatment options, side effects, and seizure prevention strategies.
    • Provide guidance on lifestyle modifications and psychosocial support related to epilepsy.
  • Coordination of Care:
    • Collaborate with neurologists, neurosurgeons, social workers, and other members of the epilepsy care team.
    • Coordinate referrals for specialized services as necessary, including surgery, neuropsychology, or dietitian services.
  • Follow-Up & Monitoring:
    • Monitor treatment response, seizure control, and medication side effects during follow-up visits.
    • Adjust care plans based on patient progress, seizure patterns, or new clinical developments.
  • Documentation & Quality Improvement:
    • Ensure accurate, timely documentation of clinical assessments, treatments, and care plans.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance care delivery and patient outcomes.
  • Research & Education (if applicable):
    • Participate in ongoing research studies related to epilepsy care and contribute to advancing the field.
    • Mentor or educate medical students, residents, or other APPs as needed.
