JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Director of Patient Safety is responsible for directing and implementing a comprehensive patient safety program at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She/he will collaborate with leaders across the organization to implement key strategies that proactively reduce clinical risk and patient harm. She/he promotes a culture of patient safety and quality by implementing policies and procedures that increase reliability in clinical systems. This includes identification, development, and implementation of processes that reduce actual or potential harm to patients and staff.
EDUCATOIN:
Clinician with a masters degree in Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Business Administration, Law or Nursing degree required. A systems engineering background is ideal. Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS) is required.
EXPERIENCE:
Must have significant experience (~10 years) as a healthcare administrator, senior risk manager or patient safety leader in a complex health care setting. Minimum of 3-5 years experience in clinical risk management and patient safety required. Knowledge of human factors engineering required. Experience developing and leading a patient safety program.
KNOWLEDGE/SPECIAL SKILLS:
Must be able to work under pressure, in a fast paced, complex health care environment. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must understand patient safety, quality improvement, and conflict resolution principles. Must have detailed knowledge of risk assessment, loss prevention and risk mitigation techniques, performance improvement techniques, corporate compliance as it relates to patient safety, clinical systems and process design, health information technology, health care standards, health laws and regulations, and State and Federal reporting requirements. Must be able to manage complexity in a fast paced and high pressure environment, Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to influence others. Proficiency with data management for purposes of data gathering, report writing and analysis is required.
