GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Manager, Renal Services and IV Therapy, Clinical Coordinator, or staff nurse, the Kidney Dialysis Technician performs various duties to assist in the treatment and care of ESRD patients in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Medical Center.  The Dialysis Technician performs those direct care activities which are allowed to be delegated to unlicensed personnel under the NYS Practice Act, regulations, hospital policies, and standards met by Nursing Services.  The Kidney Dialysis Technician also performs support functions for the unit/department as assigned by the appropriate Registered Nurse and/or manager.  They are responsible to provide support and assistance to the medical and nursing staff to assure a coordinated patient experience.  Duties may include, but are not limited to obtaining supplies and equipment necessary before, during and after a dialysis procedure, assisting with patient care under the direct supervision of an RN, assisting with station turnover, assisting with a variety of therapeutic interventions, participating in the dialysis care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, and cleaning, stocking, and organizing the dialysis treatment area and all support areas.  He/She must be reliable, work independently, be highly organized, capable of anticipating where assistance is needed and work well with people.  They must meet the unique demands of a fast paced, dialysis environment meeting quality outcomes in an economically viable and customer friendly way. AHA-BLS certification is required however, certification is not a qualifying factor to obtain the position.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education/Skills Required:

1. High school graduate.

2. Meets requirements of pre-employment screening and physical.

3. Previous patient care experience required. 

4. AHA-BLS is required or current non-AHA-BLS card will be honored up to renewal date.

5. Previous experience with renal/dialysis patients will be considered first.

6. Ability to anticipate, prioritize, perform and complete multiple job responsibilities in a timely manner.

7. Ability to deal directly with patients / families.

8. Ability to work independently under stressful conditions.

9. Requires excellent teamwork and communication skills in voice control/tone, body language, manners, attitude, accuracy and listening.

10. Requires excellent customer service skills.

11. Computer knowledge or ability / willingness to learn computer skills.

12. Ability to work with chemicals and disinfectants utilized in the dialysis area.

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
