Licensed Practical Nursing Pathway Program at the University of Vermont Health Network

Ready to further your education?

Through our partnership with Vermont State University (VTSU), our LPN Pathway Program allows full-time employees of a Vermont partner within the UVM Health Network to continue earning a salary while taking classes toward their LPN degree.

Upon successful completion, you may serve as an LPN at your respective partner organization for three years.

What is the purpose of this program?

This program aims to offer the opportunity for employees to further their nursing careers through the practical nursing program at Vermont State University. Graduates of this program will commit to a three-year commitment as a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse with a Vermont UVHMN partner.

Important Dates:

  • VTSU Applications Open: October of each calendar year
  • VTSU Application Deadline: December of each calendar year
  • UVMHN Applications Open: January of each calendar year
  • UVMHN Application Deadline: March 1st of each calendar year
  • UVMHN Cohort Selection: April 1st of each calendar year
  • VTSU Classes Begin: August of each calendar year

Eligibility Requirements

All candidates must:

  • Currently work at least 72 scheduled hours per pay period at a Vermont partner site within the UVM Health Network (part-time/per diem employees are not eligible).
  • Be in good standing with no corrective actions above a counseling level.
  • Have earned or obtained a high school diploma/GED by July 1st
  • Must commit to an LPN position at their respective partner location upon successful completion of program.

Application Deadline – March 1st of each calendar year

Please have ready the following items to upload with your application:

  • Résumé
  • Cover Letter
  • Supervisor’s Letter of Support - Written confirmation from current department leader of ability to support the employee and their schedule for the duration of the program.
  • Letter of Recommendation - Reference letter from a non-family member who can speak to your desire to enter the nursing field and your ability to be successful in it.
  • Vermont State University PN Program Acceptance Letter (must show acceptance at University of Vermont Health Network site)

Program Details

Offered in partnership with Vermont State University, the LPN Pathway Program offers a comprehensive practical nursing curriculum while participants continue their employment within the UVM Health Network.

UVMHN participants will receive 24 hours per pay period of paid study hours in order to continue earning full-time wages and benefits while pursuing their studies.

Upon completing the program, graduates will work full-time in their respective UVM Health Network partner employer for a minimum of three years. They will be reimbursed for all out-of-pocket tuition, fee, and book costs in one-third increments for three years beginning one year following receipt of licensure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the program structure for classes and clinicals?

This program will operate in an evening and weekend format for classes and clinicals. Classes will be held in the evenings at the CVMC classroom and Williston Vermont State sites. Clinicals will be held at CVMC and UVMMC every other weekend during the duration of the program. Participants may be required to travel for classes and/or clinicals.

How many work hours are required during the program?

While enrolled in the LPN program at VTSU, students will work their regular job 48 hours per pay period. Students will receive pay for an additional 24 hours per pay period to allow time for classwork, lab/clinical instruction, and studying.

How does tuition reimbursement work?

Students are responsible for paying all tuition and fees. For graduates who commit to working at their respective partner location for three years, they will reimbursed in one-third increments for all out-of-pocket tuition, fee, and books costs beginning one year after graduation.

What if I’m not an employee at one of the Vermont UVM Health Network partners? Can I still apply?

Being a full-time employee in a UVM Health Network Vermont partner is a requirement for application and enrollment. To be eligible for the program you’ll need to be hired as a full-time employee in any Vermont UVM Health Network partner.

What if I’m per diem or part-time? Am I eligible?

In order to be eligible, you need to be a full-time employee.

I work at a New York UVM Health Network partner. Am I eligible?

At this time, the LPN Pathway Program is specific to the Vermont partners within the UVM Health Network.

I’ve taken preparatory courses in the past. Do I need to retake those courses?

Possibly, depending on the timeframe and your grades. VTSU will review the courses and grades on your transcript to determine whether they meet the requirements for this program.

I’ve started nursing school in the past but did not finish. Do I need to start over?

You will need to complete the LPN Program curriculum through VTSU (coursework and lab/clinical instruction) in its entirety. For preparatory courses taken prior to enrollment, we will review the courses and grades on your transcript to determine whether they meet the requirements for this program.

I have not yet taken any of the required preparatory coursework. Can I still apply?

Completion of the preparatory coursework is required by UVMHN prior to the start of the LPN Program through VTSU. Please stay tuned for more information about completing your preparatory coursework.
